Antenatal care is shared between the community midwife and the GP. The midwife is a specialist who works closely with your doctor to look after women whilst pregnant. She will arrange hospital appointments as necessary. The midwife helps to monitor the pregnancy to ensure that both the mother and baby are well. She is specially trained to care for mothers and babies throughout normal pregnancy, labour and after the birth. The midwife visits for a short period after the birth, after which the family will be supported by the health visitor.
Patients will normally see their GP for a post natal check at 6 weeks.
